Wall St. Journal Three-peats as NYMSL Champions

September 9th, 2011

Thanks to huge first innings, defending champions Wall St. Journal crushed its two opponents and won the NYMSL title for the third year in a row in Central Park’s Heckscher Playground on Sept. 10. WSJ batted around in both innings in each game and never looked back.

In the semifinal round, High Times and WSJ pasted their opponents. HT scored often an early in its 12-0 victory over Newsweek Daily Beast. and WSJ took it to DC Comics, 17-4.

The much anticipated rematch of last year’s finalists, WSJ and HT, fizzled when WSJ posted seven runs with a two-out rally in the 1st. Adding four more runs in the second, the rout was on. HT could only knock in three runs and lost without a challenge, 11-3. WSJ’s pitcher/coach Russ Adams stymied the Bonghitters with his tough spin delivery and went the distance for the championship game win.

It was a hard loss to take for the Bonghitters, who won the regular season schedule with a 9-1 record, followed by WSJ (7-3) and DC (6-4), HT defeated WSJ twice during the season, but on Saturday they could not deliver the team’s first title since 2007.

Wall St. Journal Repeats as NYMSL Champions

September 12th, 2010

Perennial rivals Wall St. Journal and High Times faced in the 2010 Media Softball Playoffs final. The Journals came back from a 2-1 deficit to beat the Bonghitters 8-6 and hold onto the NYMSL title.

Both took their semifinals contest (WSJ 21, DC Comics 5; HT 10, WNYC 5), setting the stage for the first championship game ever between WSJ and HT. In the 2007 and 2008 semis, HT beat WSJ, and went into the 2010 playoffs at the top of the NYMSL.

The last five games between the teams dating back to 2008 were decided by two runs or less and Sunday’s contest was no different.

With the score 2-1 in the fourth inning, WSJ scored four runs on two-RBI doubles by shortstop Eddie Freel and pitcher Russ Adams. HT tied the score with two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth, but WSJ pulled ahead for good with three more runs, starting with Freel’s home run, in the sixth. HT added a run in the sixth but failed to score in the seventh.

High Times Takes Regular Season Title

September 2nd, 2010

It all came down the last game of the NYMSL season. High Times needed to beat Wall St. Journal in order to leap over DC Comics and finish in first place. If High Times lost, DC would win the regular season title. Either way, it’d be a first for both teams.

The game, played on the Great Lawn in Central Park on Sept. 2, was a see-saw battle. WSJ jumped out to a 5-0 lead with two runs in the first inning and three more in the 3rd. But errors by WSJ let HT back in the game in the 4th when the Bonghitters tallied five runs to take the lead. After WSJ tied the score at 6-6 in the 6th, HT plated what would be the game-winning run on a sac fly by 1B Darren Pelled.

WSJ went silently in the 7th, relinquishing the regular-season title they’d won in 2009.
